Moving beyond a traditional narrative centered on prominent male property owners, women’s historian Dr. Denise Rompilla explores what we can recover about women’s lives from the historical record and from the house itself. She explores how women experienced the household depending on race, status, and freedom, and what architecture, objects, and documents can tell us about women whose stories have too often remained at the margins.
