In the aftermath of the Civil War, towns throughout Massachsuetts committed funds to raise monuments dedicated to those who had died during the war. Lancaster's Memorial Hall was markedly different, having the dual purpose of serving as a monument to Lancaster's Civil War dead and to house the Town's public library.
