This special exhibition centers on one of Édouard Manet’s most ambitious paintings, the nearly life-sized The Execution of Maximilian (c. 1867–68), on loan from the National Gallery, London. This now-fragmented work depicts the death by firing squad of the short-lived emperor of Mexico, Austrian archduke Ferdinand Maximilian, by forces serving ousted Mexican president Benito Juárez.
