About Caliente Cab Co. Owner Howard Berke, a former restaurant real-estate broker, took over a Greek restaurant and nightclub in 1984, transforming it into a Mexican spot with a car-themed interior after being inspired by a Tex-Mex restaurant and his wife's love for saxophonist Gato Barbieri's album "Caliente." The original Greenwich Village location has been serving oversized, rainbow-hued margaritas and Mexican cuisine for over 40 years.
