Admiring her collection of human goods, Ariel daydreams of emerging onto the surface, walking on land, and meeting the strange human she saw sailing by. Meanwhile, Ursula – Triton’s sister – dreams about her own plans to overthrow King Triton. When a storm throws Prince Eric overboard his ship and Ariel saves his life, Triton is enraged, and destroys her precious collection of human detritus. Ariel, distraught and furious at her father, is conned by the scheming Ursula and agrees to sacrifice her voice in exchange for her land legs – but only for three days, during which time she must kiss Prince Eric, or else become Ursula’s captive forever. For three days, Ariel attempts to prove to Eric her love for him, but without her voice, she falls short. Ursula returns, dragging Ariel back into the depths of the sea, but not before revealing that she killed Ariel’s mother. Ariel destroys the shell that harnesses Ursula’s power, thereby destroying Ursula completely. King Triton realizes that his daughter does have the power to choose her own destiny, and grants her back her human form, where she is reunited with the Prince.
